WICHITA, Kan. - UAB Volleyball lost its season series to Wichita State with a 3-1 loss at the Shockers on Sunday. Blazer Volleyball dropped its seventh straight match and moves to 0-6 in American Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Shockers used a five-point run to take a commanding 10-5 lead in the first set, pulling away from the Blazers for the remainder of the set. A 9-1 run later in the set gave Wichita State a 19-9 lead, allowing the Shockers to cruise to a 25-14 set win. Wichita State's Sydney Dunning was dominant in the frame with eight kills on 17 swings.
The Blazers fought back in the second set, taking a 13-7 lead midway through the set. The six-point lead would be enough to fend off a late Shockers comeback. Despite a four-point run by Wichita State to pull within two, the Blazers called off the second set with a Mia Reese kill and Meg Jarrett ace. Jorda Crook, Abby Jones, and Reese combined for 16 kills in the second set.
Wichita State pulled out to an 8-1 lead in the third set, looking for another dominant set victory. However, multiple runs by UAB closed the Shocker lead to one late in the set. Four consecutive errors by Wichita State put the Blazers down just 22-21 before a UAB service error. Crook returned with a kill; however, Brooklyn Leggett gave the Shockers set point. Jones pulled the Blazers within a point once again, but Leggett's sixth kill of the set clinched the frame for Wichita State.
The Shockers closed out the match with another dominant set victory. After pulling out to a 7-2 lead, Wichita State went on a 6-1 run later in the set to take a 17-8 lead. Without the Blazers piecing points together, the Shockers easily capped off the match with a 25-13 set win. Wichita State out-hit the Blazers in the set, .407-.062.
STANDOUTS
Three Blazers, Crook, Jones, and Reese, each recorded double-digit kills. Crook led the way with 17 kills.
