BOCA RATON, Fla. – Yaxel Lendeborg put together another impressive performance for UAB men's basketball (10-7, 3-1 AAC) to lead the Blazers to an 81-76 win on the road at Florida Atlantic (9-8, 2-2 AAC).
The win marks the Blazers' first win at Florida Atlantic since the 2019-20 season. UAB had lost three-straight in Boca Raton.
The first half was marked by back-and-forth runs. UAB jumped out to an early 14-7 lead after three-straight buckets by Christian Coleman. The Owls answered right back with a 12-0 run of their own to jump ahead of the Blazers before UAB came right back with a 9-1 run to make it a 23-20 game with 10 minutes to go in the first half.
Florida Atlantic responded again with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes before UAB once again battled back with a 12-0 run to take a 35-28 lead with four minutes left in the first half.
The Blazers went into the break with a 40-35 lead over the Owls.
Yaxel Lendeborg turned up the intensity for the Blazers early in the second half. He gave UAB its first double-digit lead of the game with short jumper in the lane to make it 58-48 with 14 minutes left.
The Owls would not go away and tied it up with 7:10 remaining on a putback. From that point on the game remained within one possession until the final minute of the contest.
Florida Atlantic took their first lead with 2:58 remaining on a pair of free throws from Tre Carroll. The Blazers were able to get to the line on back-to-back possessions while Vasquez and Coleman converted each of their attempts to put UAB back in front by two.
The Blazers were able to get a fast break with 46 seconds remaining and Lendeborg found Vasquez for the lay-in. Christian Coleman put the game away with a layup at the 33 second mark after the Blazers broke the press to put UAB up by five. Despite a chaotic final 20 seconds, the Blazers hung on for an 81-76 win over the Owls.
