BIRMINGHAM – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the Division l Women's Regional Awards with the UAB women's tennis team and Adela Wasserbauerova earning accolades.
The ITA Southern Region includes schools across Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
As a team, the Blazers earned the ITA Southern Regional Community Service Award, marking it the eighth consecutive year UAB has won the award. In 2017, the ITA began the Community Service Award, with the Blazers being the first team to earn in it and have won it ever since.
"I am very happy to see the team get acknowledged for the work they put in for community service," head coach Mark Tjia said. "They take a lot of pride in serving others and I couldn't be prouder of the time and energy they devote to it year in and year out."
Individually, Wasserbauerova became the first Blazer to earn the ITA Southern Regional Most Improved Player in program history and the third to earn the Southern Regional ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship award. Jana Hecking won the Cissie Leary award in 2020 followed by Annalisa Smith in 2023.
"Winning the Most Improved Player is the cap on the outstanding year that Adela had," Tjia said. "It's the award I had really hoped she would win. We have one of the toughest regions in the country with a lot of elite players, so it is definitely an honor she can be proud of."
Wasserbauerova finished the 2023-24 season with a team-high 21 overall singles wins and 15 dual match victories, with 13 of those coming at the No. 1 position. In doubles she had 15 victories overall and 11 dual match wins.
A season before (2022-23), Wasserbauerova had 13 overall singles wins and seven dual match wins. In doubles she earned 14 overall victories and six dual match wins.
