GREENVILLE – UAB Softball closed out the afternoon with a 3-2 victory over the ECU Pirates. The Blazers went for six hits on the afternoon, holding East Carolina without a run through five innings.
The Blazers improved to 13-13 in the AAC and 22-28 overall.
IN THE INNINGS
The game began with a leadoff walk from Auburn Dupree, followed by back-to-back singles from Hannah Dorsett and Bella Wiggins. With three Blazers on base, the Green and Gold were ready to score. Two outs came soon thereafter before Alyssa Aguilar sent a single to center field, plating Dorsett and Dupree to give an early 2-0 lead.
The Pirates then responded, gaining an unearned run on an error from Lindsey Smith. Following a fielder's choice, ECU trailed by one, but the Green and Gold halted the momentum with a double play to close out the first. Following a 1-2-3 top half, ECU tallied a hit, before stealing second but was left stranded. UAB responded with an offensive in the third: a triple from Bella Wiggins, followed by a sac fly RBI from Lindsey Smith to give UAB the 3-1 lead.
Back-to-back three-up-three-downs brought the game to the fifth inning, with a hit from Dupree before she was caught stealing. The Blazers went without being able to score, but Lindsey Smith was able to flash leather with three straight groundouts in the bottom of the fifth. She continued that momentum in the sixth with a double to put herself in scoring position. However, UAB was unable to score.
ECU responded with a one-out single up the middle, followed by a fielder's choice. The Blazers kept ECU at bay with Kaily Collett halting the Pirates with a groundout. With UAB unable to score in the top of the seventh, the final three outs came into view. A single to right started the inning, followed by another single to put two Pirates on base. A sac bunt advanced the runners to second and third before a sac fly RBI put ECU behind one run.
With the final out in the game at stake, the Blazers were able to close out the game with a groundout to second, stranding two runners on base and taking the victory.
