TAMPA - The UAB baseball team made a huge step towards the AAC Conference Tournament today. They beat South Florida 4-3 in a tightly contested game.
Brayton Brown got a hit in his 1st at bat that gave UAB the lead. Brown hit a single through the right side to score Darryl Buggs. Just before that the South Florida center fielder robbed a Nick Hollifield home run attempt. South Florida answered in the 2nd inning with four hits and two runs. Two singles by Ben Rozenblum and Eric Snow scored the two USF runs. After two innings the score was 2-1 Bulls.
UAB answered in the 4th inning after Nick Hollifield doubled down the left field line. He was then driven in by a Tyler Waugh groundout to tie the game at two. Tyler Harrington has been batting excellent over the past few weeks and he continued that today. He hit an opposite field two run homer to take the lead in the 5th.
Blayze Berry struck out the side in the 5th inning to total nine in the game. South Florida then hit a solo home run in the next inning to cut the lead in half. 4-3 Blazers led after 6. No runs were scored in innings 7-9 in big part because of Ty Hutto and Brock Hill. Hutto pitched the 8th inning retiring all three batters. Hill came in and did the same thing in the 9th, earning the save.
UAB now jumps to sole possession of 5th place in the AAC standings.
