BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball defeated the UNT Mean Green early Friday Evening to end the four-game losing streak. The Blazers tallied six hits on seven runs and held North Texas to no runs on the night, putting the Mean Green at a record of 10-3 in AAC play.
The Green and Gold are 6-7 in the American after the win.
IN THE INNINGS
The Blazers' defense, led by Leigha Kirby in the circle, started with a 1-2-3 inning. The Blazers responded with an early walk drawn to put Hannah Dorsett on base. After Bella Wiggins struck out swinging, Dorsett would swipe second, bringing Lindsey Smith to the plate. Smith sat at a 3-1 count before delivering a shot to left field to send herself and Dorsett across home.
With UAB up 2-0 entering the second, Kirby delivered the first strikeout before walking a batter. Another batter struck out looking before a passed ball put two Mean Green runners on base. Kirby delivered one last strikeout in the top of the second to hold UNT at zero.
The bottom of the second began with a walk for Ant Henderson before McKinley Hubbard entered as a pinch runner. Mackenzie Droddy delivered a sacrifice bunt after a second walk to load the bases for the Blazers. The Hannahs (Dorsett, Miles) and Auburn Dupree delivered hits to post three runs, giving UAB the 5-0 lead.
The Mean Green made a second-inning pitching adjustment, halting the scoring rally before Smith approached the plate to send another 2RBI hit, putting UAB up seven runs. The Blazers went on to deliver another three-up-three-down to send the Blazers in offense but were unable to capitalize. North Texas responded with a double down the right field line to threaten a run but was halted by a groundout to Smith.
UNT sent a single up the middle in the top of the fifth before drawing a walk to put the Mean Green in scoring position. They sent two fly balls into the glove of Dupree and Wiggins before Kirby struck out one more batter.
UAB and North Texas had a quiet bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, but Alyssa Aguilar woke up the momentum with a single, followed by a sac bunt from Droddy. The Blazers did not close out with another run but kept North Texas off the board to conclude the top of the seventh, taking the game 7-0.
