UAB Knocks off Conference Leading Roadrunners

SAN ANTONIO, TX - Th UAB baseball team started off game one with a bang winning 7-3 over the #1 team atop the American Athletic Conference.
UAB led in the 2nd inning and not again until the 6th, but were able to keep the lead past that point. The Blazers scored in the 2nd inning when Jake Smallwood put down a sacrifice bunt that forced UTSA into an error. The one hit in the inning came on Brayton Brown's 9th double of the year.
UTSA went on to have a three run 4th inning that put the Roadrunners ahead until the 6th. On a full count with two outs, Hector Rodriguez stepped up and hit a single that would score runners from 1st and 3rd. The next run came on another single which allowed Rodriquez to score, but a phenomenal throw from Tyler Waugh would get the last out, out at home.
The Green and Gold responded immediately with two runs of their own to tie the game. A three hit 5th inning was started by a Tyler Waugh single. Waugh was able to advance to 3rd with just one out, and then Darryl Buggs layed down a sacrifice bunt to score Waugh. Nick Hollifield took a ball opposite field to then score David Harris and the game was tied at three. UAB went on to take the lead in the 6th inning when Mayes White got his second hit of the night to score Jake Smallwood.
UTSA left two on base in the 8th inning, before the Blazers would put up another three runs in the 9th. Four 9th inning hits started off with a Mayes White single. Logan Braunschweig was able to score David Harris and White with a double down the left field line. Hollfield then singled up the middle to score Braunschweig. UTSA left another two on base in the 9th inning securing the Blazers third straight win.

UAB will play the Roadrunners again tomorrow at 11:00 AM for game 2.
