BIRMINGHAM – UAB Track and Field travel to Starkville, Miss. to compete in the 2024 Alumni Bulldog Relays hosted by Mississippi State. The Blazers come off a weekend at the Yellow Jacket Invite in Atlanta, where they finished with 17 Top-Ten finishes in their outdoor debut.
The Green and Gold will compete on Friday, March 22 starting at 2 p.m.
"We are looking to build on some positives from last week. We still have athletes from back from injuries and want to get them into the fold," said head coach, Kurt Thomas. "The team has had some great training sessions and we need to put some good races, throws and jumps. We're still rounding into outdoor shape, but expect the girls to compete hard and keep getting better each meet."
The Blazers have several competitors in rotation for the Bulldog Relays, including a freshman corps that has made great strides in indoor and outdoor. Gabby Washington, debuted her outdoor season as a collegiate with a top-five finish in the 100 meters. Jasmine Dereje, who finished third in the 400 hurdles, will be competing in the event in Starkville for the Blazers.
In addition to the newcomers, the veterans will also be competing. Kat Duren will also be competing in the meet, primarily in sprints and hurdles. Her younger sister will join her after making her outdoor debut at the Yellow Jacket invite last week.
In field events, Birthe Franck Petersen will make an appearance in throws, competing in hammer throw and shot put. In addition to throws, USF transfer Loren Johnson will represent the Green and Gold in jumps after a second-place finish in triple jump at Georgia Tech.
