UAB Baseball Splits Double Header with UNA

FLORENCE - The UAB Blazers faced the University of North Alabama in a double header on Saturday.

Game 1
The Lions started off hot in game one scoring seven runs in the first inning. UNA hit the ball six times with two home runs.

UAB could not get much going with only one hit through three innings, until a double by Jake Samllwood. Smallwood scored Brayton Brown who got on base on a walk. Brayton Brown then grabs an RBI in the 5th inning scoring Tyler Harrington.

Blayze Berry only gave up three hits after the first inning, striking out six total batters. Brock Hill made his second appearance of the year, taking over for Berry in the 7th. Hill went 3.0 IP, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 R.

15 strikeouts for the UNA pitching staff held the Blazers to only two runs until the 9th inning. UAB put up six runs in the top of the 9th to tie the game at eight. The game tying run came on a three run bomb to right field by Jake Smallwood.

UNA hit a walk off home run in their first at bat in the bottom of the 9th.

Game 2
UAB starts off the game with three runs in the first inning. A completely different start than that of the first game. North Alabama came back in the 2nd inning and put up five runs on two hits, one error, and two wild pitches.

The Lions struck again, this time in the 4th inning when Thomas Ballard stepped on the mound. Cal Cook singled to left field and scored two runs.

Smallwood totaled five RBIs and three hits in both games today. The Blazers tied the game up in the 7th inning on three hits. Most notably, Tyler Waugh singled to right field and scored two runs.

In the 8th inning the Blazers added two more runs to complete the comeback win. Peyton Puckett came in and singled, scoring Waugh. Waugh went two for four with four RBIs and two runs scored.

UAB grabbed a season high 15 total strikeouts in game 2. Colin Patterson had seven, while Brooks House and Christian Clack both had four.

The Blazers will finish up the series against UNA tomorrow at 1 p.m.
