Rice Beats UAB, 94-71

BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball (17-9, 9-4 AAC) lost to Rice (10-16, 4-9 AAC) on Wednesday night at Bartow Arena, 94-71. The Owls led by as many as 29 points in the contest after building the lead to 25 in the first half.
The Blazers jumped out to an early 10-3 lead, but things went sideways quickly. Over the next 10 minutes, the Owls outscored UAB 30-5 to take a commanding 33-15 lead with 6:20 remaining in the half.
Travis Evee hit a three at the buzzer of the first half to put Rice up 49-24 at the half for the Blazers' largest halftime deficit this season.
UAB cut the lead to 18 at the 16-minute mark in the second half after Eric Gaines found Yaxel Lendeborg for a quick fastbreak layup. However, Rice scored the next five points to go lead by 23 once again.
The Blazers cut the deficit to 16 after Christian Coleman's layup at the 12:15 mark, but that was the closest that they would get. Rice built its lead up to as many as 29 points in the second half before the contest ended with a final score of 94-71.

- The 23-point loss is the Blazers' largest margin of defeat since January 16, 2020 at FIU.
- UAB shot only .344 from the field, the team's worst since November 28, 2023 vs. McNeese State.
- Yaxel Lendeborg recorded his 12th double-double of the season with 16 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
- Daniel Ortiz surpassed 200 made three pointers for his career.
- Rice had five players finish in double figures.
- The defeat snaps UAB's nine-game home winning streak.
