Baseball Drops Game Despite 11-7 Hitting Advantage

BIRMINGHAM - Today marked the first game of the 2024 baseball season for the UAB Blazers. Coach Dunn and the Blazers took on the Owls of Kennesaw State.
The first of a three game series started with two runs in the first inning. The first being on a Tyler Harrington Double to right field, which scored Logan Braunschweig. The second run came on a Jake Smallwood single to center field. Smallwood finished the night going 3 for 5 with three singles in his UAB debut.
In the 4th inning UAB would add to their 2-0 lead with a bomb from freshman Alan Choo. The Home run drove in one run, and extended the lead to four.
Blayze Berry was stunning in his first outing of the 2024 campaign, pitching five innings with 1 H, 1 R, 4 K, and 0 ER. Berry allowed the one run on a sac fly in the 5th.
Logan Braunschweig pushed Mayes White across the plate with a fielder's choice RBI. The score stood 5-1 in the 6th inning.
The Blazers had dominated with Berry pitching and a 9-2 hitting advantage over the Owls. In the 7th inning, the tide started to change with a two run homer by Nate Anderson. The runs kept coming in the 8th inning as eight runs came across the plate to give the owls their first lead at 11-5. The owls scored 10 unanswered runs after the Blazers took a 5-1 lead. Isaac Bouton helped the Owls by homering twice in the 8th inning.
Coach Dunn went to the bullpen five times, notably bringing in freshmen Colin Patterson for his collegiate debut. He went for one inning with two strikeouts and two runs given up.
Kennesaw State scored one more run in the top of the 9th before giving UAB a chance at a 9th inning rally. The Blazers scored two in the bottom of the 9th and left three on base, while making one last effort at closing the gap. Tyler Waugh and Austin Young both walked to earn two RBI's and ended the scoring at 12-7.

The Blazers are back tomorrow and Sunday to finish the series vs Kennesaw State. First pitch for tomorrow is 2 p.m. and Sunday is set for 1 p.m.
