Freshman of the Year Richter Headlines UAB Men’s Soccer’s AAC Postseason Awards

BIRMINGHAM – UAB defender Mathis Richter was named American Conference Co-Freshman of the Year the league announced on Thursday. Forward Tony Kim was also recognized as an All-Conference Second Team performer while Ole Jessen and Richter were named to the All-Freshman Team.
Richter started all 15 matches for the Blazers in his debut season. The defender from Bremen, Germany was an anchor for the UAB back line throughout the season, playing a team-high 1,339 minutes. He scored his first collegiate goal in the Blazers' match against Gardner-Webb.
Kim finished the season with three goals and one assist for a UAB attack that scored its most goals since the 2019 season. He had the Blazers' game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over North Florida as well as UAB's lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Northern Kentucky. He led UAB with 14 shots on goal in his 13 matches.
Ole Jessen was another freshman star in his debut season as a Blazer. The Aarhus, Denmark native had one goal and two assists on the year as an outside back. Jessen's goal came in the Blazers' first conference win since 2022 against Florida Atlantic.
After going 0-11-4 in 2023, the Blazers improved to 4-6-5 in their first year under head coach David Lilly with 16 of their 18 goals being scored by underclassmen.
