Volleyball Splits Friday/Sunday Action

BIRMINGHAM - Abby Jones dominant weekend pushes UAB to a win over North Texas (8-15, 9-7 AAC) 3-0. UAB also played East Carolina (16-6, 9-3 AAC) to a 0-3 defeat at Bartow Arena this afternoon.
Jones hit .333 good enough for 4.50 points/set and only four hitting errors. She had 14 kills and zero errors in The Blazers win over North Texas.
The Blazers dominated the stats hitting .305 to North Texas's .075. UAB was hot from the start winning the first set 25-21.Thanks to a hot start from Jorda Crook the blazers took a 10-3 lead with two service aces by Crook. Five different Blazers had a kill in that second set as UAB wins 25-15. UAB used a strong end to the third set to sweep North Texas 3-0 and jump to 9th in the AAC standings.
Crook is just seven kills away from 300 and just one away from 800 attacks on the season. Senior Chloe Rodriguez leads the team in hitting percentage (min. 100 attempts) with .289. Senior Madison Page is just 13 blocks away from 100 on the season.
On senior day the Blazers dropped a tight match to East Carolina. UAB did not hit as well in the second game of the weekend hitting just .113. The two bright spots were Abby Jones and Mia Reese both hitting .182. Brooklyn Allison recorded 19 digs to total 253 on the year.
East Carolina led the entire first set winning 25-14. The momentum changed into the second as UAB led by as many as five points. Mia Reese put the Blazers up 13-9 early in the second. A challenge by ECU changed the score from 24-21 to 23-22 and put the Pirates within one. They would rattle off four out of the next five to win the second set. A Kelsey Smith and Madison Page block tied the game at 16. The Pirates were too much, winning set three 25-21.
UAB is back in action on Wednesday for the final home match of the season against Memphis. First serve will be at 7 pm in Bartow Arena.
