BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's tennis will open the 2024 season with a pair of matches on the road against AAC programs. The Blazers will travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers on Friday, January 12 at 5 p.m. CT before facing SMU on Sunday, January 14 at 1 p.m. CT.
UAB enters its first season under the leadership of head coach Ezequiel Gils. Gils served as the volunteer assistant at Alabama for the last three seasons, helping the Crimson Tide reach as high as No. 18 in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings during the 2020-21 season and to No. 45 during the 2022-23 season.
The Blazers return four major contributors from last year's roster in Carlos Gimenez Perez, Vojtech Podzemny, Georgios Nouchakis and Noah Malige. Gimenez Perez finished his freshman season with a stellar 12-4 singles record while Malige added an impressive 15-4 mark in his sophomore campaign.
The Blazers have also added a pair of freshman standouts in Juan Pablo Valdez and Ondrej Valek. The Freshman duo impressed this fall and are set to contribute early.
