BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball returns to action for the Fall Schedule slate for 2023. The Blazers welcome six teams to Mary Bowers and travel to Oxford where they'll compete in a road matchup.
"We are excited to hit the field and compete. Our team has put in solid work since returning to campus and we look forward to playing," said head coach AJ Daugherty. "Our fall schedule allows us to look at many different lineups and live situations. These may be exhibition games but we expect to compete at a high level and bring good energy to each opportunity as we continue to learn."
The Blazers come off a memorable season in the spring, finishing second overall in Conference USA. They collected a myriad of postseason awards including a Player of the Year honor for Sierra Frazier and a Coach of the Year selection for Daugherty, who entered his first season at the NCAA Division I level.
UAB opens up the series on Sept. 22 at Mary Bowers, hosting Itawamba and Snead State for the first weekend of competition. The Blazers take the 3:30 and 6:00 PM slot taking on the Indians and Parsons.
Itawamba went 29-18 on the year and closed out the season with a 1-2 loss to Mississippi Gulf Coast in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. Snead State finished 31-33 in Spring 2023 with an ACCC Player of the Year nod to Brittany Slaten, who batted .430 on the year, recording 43 RBIs, swiping 32 stolen bases, and six homers.
The following week, UAB invites Chipola and Wallace State – Hanceville. The Lions finished 52-7 and 30-2 in the conference, where they fell to Walters State by one run in the NJCAA DI Softball World Series. Chipola finished 28-25 in the 2023 season.
In October, the Blazers travel to Oxford to compete in the Tera Ross Tournament hosted by Jacksonville State. UAB competes against Bishop State and Southern Union State at 10 and 11:15 a.m. at the Oxford Softball Complex. The Wildcats went 33-25 with a 21-7 conference record, while Southern Union closed out the season, falling to Wallace State – Hanceville and Wallace State – Dothan in the South District Tournament.
The Green and Gold return to Mary Bowers to close out the season against Marion Military Institute and Shelton State on Oct. 13. The Blazers close out with a 3:30 meeting against the Tigers, led by ACCC North Coach of the Year Jeff Benson, and a 6:00 meeting against the Bucs who finished 22-29.
