UAB Baseball Downs the Fighting Irish in Game Three

BIRMINGHAM – Led by starting pitcher, Brooks Walton, UAB (4-7) defeated Notre Dame (5-4) 5-2 at Young Memorial Field on Sunday, March 5.

UAB posted runs on the board first after back-to-back doubles from John Marc Mullins and Tyler Waugh followed by an RBI single from Christian Hall in the third. The Blazers held the Fighting Irish to no runs through four innings before they scored a run off a triple and a fielding error. UAB answered back in the bottom fifth with a two RBI home run from Mullins. Both teams scored the final runs in the seventh.

Brooks Walton (1-0) who started on the mound for the Blazers threw eight and a third innings and allowed only two earned runs on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts during his 32 batters faced. Walton collected his second most strikeouts (7) and innings pitched (8.1). Carson Knight earned his first save of the season after coming on to relieve Walton in the ninth. Knight was lights out and collected the final two outs of the game to secure the win for the Blazers.

Offensively for UAB, John Marc Mullins (2-for-3), Christian Hall (2-for-3), Gavin Lewis Jr. (2-for-3), Tyler Waugh (1-for-4) and Logan Braunschweig (1-for-4) led the Blazers. Mullins started the Blazers' bats with a double in the third and a two-tun home run in the fifth. Hall collected two hits – both singles – and an RBI while Lewis Jr. also collected two singles. Waugh earned two RBIs from a single and a fielder's choice, and Braunschweig collected a single in the bottom eighth.

UAB travels down to Auburn, Ala. to play its third in-state foe – the Auburn Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 6 P.M. on SEC Network+.
