The Blazers Welcome the 49ers for Weekend Series

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Baseball team (8-16, 2-4) will host the Charlotte 49ers (11-13, 3-3) for a three-game Conference USA series at Young Memorial Field. Friday's first pitch is set for 5 P.M. and will air on CUSA.tv.

Both teams enter the weekend with mid-week victories. UAB dominated on both sides of the ball to secure a 6-3 win over Jacksonville State while Charlotte defeated Gardner-Webb by a score of 6-5 in walk-off fashion. The Blazers and 49ners lead C-USA in fielding with Charlotte just 0.0006 percent ahead of UAB.
UAB BLAZERS
Logan Braunschweig, who currently is riding a six-game hit streak, leads the team in batting average (.373), slugging percentage (.441), on-base percentage (.479) and stolen bases (7) while sitting second in hits (22) and tied for third in runs (12). Tyler Waugh (.317) and Blayze Berry (.310) follow Braunschweig in batting average. Over the past four games, Waugh has batted .500 and he sits second in on-base percentage (.438).
Multiple Blazers are ranked in many different categories within C-USA. Offensively, Henry Hunter ranks third in triples with three while John Marc Mullins and Ben Abernathy sit fifth and sixth with two triples each. UAB enters the weekend second in C-USA for sacrifice bunts with Abernathy and Darryl Buggs ranking third and fourth with four and three, respectfully. Brayton Brown sits with eight doubles on the year which puts him fifth overall in the conference. Defensively, UAB holds a .978 fielding percentage while Hunter ranks first overall in fielding and third overall in caught stolen bases. Mullins sits second for most assists (21) during conference play.
Starting Rotation:
UAB will keep its weekend rotation – Brooks Walton, Blayze Berry and Carson Myers. Walton (2-2, 5.34 ERA) received the win in game one at FIU after he threw seven complete innings and allowed five runs on ten hits with eight strikeouts which tied his season high. Berry (1-2, 4.54 ERA) was given the loss last Saturday in Miami after he allowed seven runs – six earned – on ten hits through five and one thirds of an inning. Myers (1-1, 3.34 ERA) picked up his first win of the season after he threw five solid innings and allowed two runs on ten hits with six strikeouts during the rubber match against FIU.
CHARLOTTE 49ERS
In their last conference matchup, the 49ers dropped the series to Dallas Baptist taking only game three by a score of 8-1; however, Charlotte will enter the weekend after rallying in the seventh and walking it off over Gardner-Webb, 6-5, on Tuesday.
Charlotte is led offensively by Cam Fisher who posts the highest batting average (.402) as well as the highest slugging and on-base percentage - .908 and .540 respectfully. He also leads the team in runs (33), hits (35), home runs (14) and runs batted in (27). Nine 49ers post a .200 or better batting average with no batters currently sitting at a .300 or better average.
Starting Rotation:
The 49ers will start with Wyatt Hudepohl on the mound Friday followed by Cameron Hansen with their Sunday starter to be determined. Hudepohl (1-3, 4.66 ERA) will make his seventh start and appearance for Charlotte. He's allowed 22 runs – 19 earned – on 40 hits with 42 strikeouts through 36.2 innings pitched. Hansen (2-0, 2.78 ERA) is set to make his third start and ninth appearance after having thrown 32.1 innings and has allowed 11 all earned runs on 19 hits with 26 strikeouts.
UAB AND CHARLOTTE HISTORY
Dating all the way back to both program's first year as a team (1979), UAB and Charlotte have a long history. UAB leads the overall series 35-31 which includes wins in both the Sun Belt Conference and Conference USA. In the last matchup, the 49ers swept the Blazers for the first time since 2018 while the Blazers have not beaten Charlotte since 2019.
