UAB Baseball Falls to No. 10 Vanderbilt in Seven Innings

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – UAB Baseball (1-3) fell to No. 10 Vanderbilt (3-2) in seven innings on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Hawkins Field.

Although Vanderbilt got on the board first, UAB bounced back to tie the game, 1-1, in the third inning after scoring a run on a throwing error by second base. Henry Hunter caught two base runners including Enrique Bradfield Jr. who has not been caught stealing since 2021.

Colin Daniel (0-1) received the loss for the Blazers after allowing three runs – all earned – on three hits and two strikeouts during his two innings. JC Sewell made his first start on the mound and pitched two innings allowing one earned run on three hits. Five Blazers followed Daniel and Sewell including Isaac Warrick, John Luke Marlin, Carson Knight, Thomas Ballard and Matthew Reed. The five combined for nine runs on five hits.

Offensively for UAB, Ben Abernathy, Darryl Buggs and Peyton Puckett all connected with the ball and collected one hit. Christian Hall earned a RBI after he reached base on a fielder's choice and Logan Braunschweig went home.

Vanderbilt gets on the score board first after an Enrique Bradfield Jr. single followed by a RJ Austin single which scored Bradfield Jr.

Top Third

UAB tied the game after Logan Braunschweig led off with a walk then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ben Abernathy singled to third base followed Christian Hall who reached on a fielder's choice which scored Braunschweig.

The Commodores broke the tie after Davis Diaz singled, Matthew Polk was hit by pitch and Alan Espinal hit a three-run home run which cleared the bases.

Vanderbilt's RJ Schreck and Calvin Hewitt started the inning off with a hit by pitch and a walk, respectfully, followed Diaz reaching on an error by right field which scored Schreck. Jonathan Vastine doubled to bring in Hewett then Polk was hit by pitch followed by a Espinal walk which brought in Diaz. Bradfield sacrificed flied out to right field to bring in Vastine. The Commodores scored their last run of the inning off an Austin single which brought in Polk.

Vanderbilt extended its lead after Hewett was hit by pitch followed by Diaz single to left center field which scored Hewett. Polk homered to left center field which brought in two runs. Espinal followed with a home run to left field.

The Blazers welcome Murray State for a three-game series on Feb. 24-26 at the Hoover Met Stadium in Hoover, Ala. Admission is free for all attendees. Game one's first pitch is scheduled for 2 P.M. on Friday, Feb. 24.
