Blazers Fall Short to South Alabama

Mobile, Ala. – The UAB Blazers (1-2) battle in the ninth with clutch RBI hits but fall short, 7-6, to the South Alabama Jaguars (3-1) on Sunday, Feb. 19.
The Blazers jumped out in front during their first at bat when Christian Hall hit a three-run home run – the first homer of the season. UAB kept the lead until the fourth when South Alabama tied the game at 4-4. Both teams had two scoreless innings before the Jaguars took their first lead of the game in the seventh.
Going into the ninth, UAB trailed three runs. Darryl Buggs started the short rally after reaching base on a throwing error then John Marc Mullins singled to get runners in scoring position. Ben Abernathy and Hall both collected RBI hits which put the Blazers down a run before South Alabama collected three outs.
Tyler Haines (0-1) was given the loss after allowing one earned run on two hits and one strikeout during his 1.1 innings on the mound. Brooks Walton started for UAB and went 3.1 innings allowing four runs – all earned – on eight hits with three strikeouts. Following Walton, six Blazers went to the mound including Christian Clack, John Luke Marlin, Braxton Shelton, Isaac Warrick, Chase Ingram and Haines.
Shelton, Warrick and Ingram all made their debut with the Blazers and pitched for a combined 1.2 innings and allowed a total of two runs on four hits. Clack and Marlin both collected scoreless outings.
Although being out hit 11-14, three Blazers collected multi-hit games including Mullins (3-for-5), Abernathy (2-for-5) and Hall (3-for-5) and all three brought in the team's six runs. This is Mullins second multi-hit game in the first three games of the season. Logan Braunschweig, Mayes White – who started as the designated hitter – and Henry Hunter also collected hits.
Defensively, UAB turned three double plays and collected 24 putouts with ten of those from Hall at first base.
