UAB Secures First Win of the Season

Mobile, Ala. – UAB (1-1) earns its first win of the 2023 season after defeating Northwestern State University (0-2) 4-3 on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Jaguar Classic.
Defense was the name of the game with 11 strikeouts from the Blazers' pitching staff and both teams combining for only eight hits on the day. Logan Braunschweig collected five putouts while Jonah Smith (1-0) received the win and Ben Abernathy (1) earned the save.
For the Blazers, Carson Myers started and threw five innings on the mound allowing two runs – both earned – on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Four Blazers followed Myers including Leo Harris, Thomas Ballard, Smith and Abernathy. Harris and Ballard both threw in the sixth inning and allowed one earned run on three hits, two walks and a strikeout. Abernathy, who started at third base, came to the mound in the eighth inning and threw a shutout to secure the win for UAB.
Offensively for UAB, four different players scored the Blazers' four runs – Brayton Brown (1-for-4), Darryl Buggs (0-for-2), Braunschweig (0-for-2) and Abernathy (0-for-4) – and two Blazers record RBIs including John Marc Mullins and Henry Hunter. Christian Hall (1-for-3) and Brown collected hits today. Hall recorded a single in the third inning and Brown also hit a single in the second when UAB took an early 2-0 lead.

NSU tied the game after starting the inning off with a Bailyn Sorensen walked followed by a Michael Dattalo single up the middle. Jake Haze doubled to left center which brought in Sorensen and Dattalo.

The Blazers break the tie with one run after Buggs reached on a fielding error by NSU's right fielder and advances to third on a wild pitch. Gavin Lewis Jr. was hit by the pitch followed by John Marc Mullins reaching on a fielder's choice which scores Buggs (unearned).

The Demons answer back and tie the game after Sorensen tripled down the left field line, Bo Willis walked and Dattalo singled through the left side which scored Sorensen.

UAB takes the lead after Mullins was hit by a pitch, Ben Abernathy reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second before Christian Hall walked. During Brayton Brown's at bat, Abernathy scored on a wild pitch.

UAB will play the final game of the Jaguar Classic against South Alabama on Sunday, Feb. 19 at Stanky Field. First pitched is scheduled for 3 P.M. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
