UAB Kicks Off the 2023 Season at the Jaguar Classic

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Baseball team opens the 2023 season on the road in Mobile, Ala. at the Jaguar Classic. The Blazers play Eastern Kentucky on Opening Day, Northwestern State on Saturday and will close out the tournament with South Alabama on Sunday.

UAB is coming off a 31-25 season in the first year under Casey Dunn. The Blazers made a postseason appearance for the first time since 2018 at the Conference USA Tournament. The 2023 roster includes 23 returners and 17 newcomers.
FIRST MEETINGS – EKU AND NSU
UAB will start the Jaguar Classic against Eastern Kentucky University on Friday, Feb. 17, at noon. There will be no broadcast of the game, but fans can follow along through the live stats link.
This will be the first meeting between the Blazers and the Colonels. EKU ended the 2022 season 38-20 where they tied for best conference record in the ASUN. The Colonels won the ASUN Conference West Division heading into the postseason where they went to the semifinals. EKU is under the direction of head coach Chris Prothro who is in his third season.
On Saturday, the Blazers will be the home team versus Northwestern State University with first pitch scheduled for 11 A.M. UAB and NSU will also be meeting for the first time in program history. At the helm for the Demons is Bobby Barbier who is entering his fourth season as head coach. Last season, NSU went 25-29 overall and 12-12 during conference play.
ROUND TWO
For the first time in 14 years, UAB and South Alabama will meet on the diamond once again. The last meeting between the Blazers and Jaguars came on Match 7, 2009 in Waco, Texas at the QTI Baylor Classic. UAB defeated South Alabama 13-8 after coming from behind and tallying 11 runs over three innings.
Sunday's game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ with first pitch at 3 P.M.
