BIRMINGHAM – Redshirt sophomore guard Mia Moore scored 27 points in her first game as a Blazer to lead the UAB women's basketball team to a 70-63 victory over Alabama A&M on Monday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
Moore scored 22 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, including 13 in the fourth quarter. She shot 11-of-14 from the floor and added six rebounds.
UAB shot 44 percent and was even in the rebounding category with Alabama A&M at 35 each. The Blazers played from behind for the majority of the game until Moore took over down the stretch to propel UAB to victory.
"I thought Alabama A&M had a great game plan today and are well coached," Head Coach Randy Norton said. "We are really proud of our team as we felt they played with a ton of grit, made clutch free throws and made winning plays in the 4th quarter."
The Blazers scored the first five points of the game and held Alabama A&M to 0-of-4 to open the contest, but the Bulldogs then made five of their next eight shots and went on an 11-0 run to force an early UAB timeout. A 3-pointer from Genevive Wedemeyer ended a 0-for-10 drought for the Blazers, but the Bulldogs led 15-10 after one.
Alabama A&M played in front for the majority of the second quarter, but a reverse layup from Desiree Ware gave UAB its first lead since the first two minutes of the game at 28-26, and the two teams headed into the locker room tied 30-30 at halftime.
Moore took over for the Blazers and scored nine points in the third, but the Bulldogs continued to execute and took a 50-47 lead into the fourth quarter.
The two teams continued to trade punches and entered the final media timeout of the game deadlocked at 57-57 with 4:30 left to play.
Moore scored the next six points of the game to give the Blazers a 63-57 lead, however, Alabama A&M answered with a 5-0 run, forcing UAB into a timeout with 2:15 remaining. A bucket from Kylee Schneringer gave the Blazers a three-point lead, and following Alabama A&M going 1-of-2 from the line with 1:34 left, UAB scored the final five points of the game for the victory.
Alabama A&M had three players score in double figures, led by Amiah Simmons with 14.
The Blazers return to action a week from tonight when they host Western Carolina at 6 p.m.
