BIRMINGHAM – Tracey Bershers scored a career-high 20 points and Mia Moore added 18 to lead the UAB women's basketball team to a dominant 81-56 victory over Western Carolina on Monday night at Bartow Arena.
The Blazers (2-0) shot 45 percent for the game and had 17 assists compared to just seven turnovers. UAB forced 17 Western Carolina turnovers and turned those into 24 points.
Sophomore Molly Moffitt was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor and joined Bershers and Moore in double figures with 10 points to go along with seven rebounds. Freshman Jade Weathersby had seven points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
WCU (1-2) shot 37.5 percent for the game and was led by Zanoria Cruz (12) and Jade Burton (10) who were the only players in double digits for the Catamounts.
Despite early shooting struggles, UAB was 6-of-6 from the free throw line to kickstart the Blazers in the beginning of the contest. Courtesy of a spark off the bench from Molly Moffitt, the Blazers made four of their final eight shots to end the quarter and a 3-pointer from Moffitt gave UAB a 21-16 lead at the first quarter break.
UAB extended that lead to 27-18 with a corner three from Moore which forced a Catamount timeout with 8:15 left in the half. That three was part of a 9-0 Blazer run as UAB extended its lead to 14 at 32-18.
The Blazers ultimately shot 52 percent in the second quarter and held a 45-30 halftime advantage. Moore had 12 at the break and Breshers added nine.
UAB remained on fire out of the locker room and Bershers' fourth triple of the evening extended UAB's lead to 57-38 and forced a WCU timeout with 5:48 left in the third. Bershers would ultimately make five threes in the game.
UAB put it on cruise control on the fourth quarter and outscored WCU 16-10 in the final 10 minutes for the final tally of 81-56.
The Blazers outscored Western Carolina in every quarter and held the advantage in second chance points (13-6), fast break points (12-5), points in the paint (44-40) and bench points (21-18).
UAB now heads way north for the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage. While there, the Blazers play Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 18, followed by facing either Utah or Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 19.
