UAB Women’s Basketball Falls to Eastern Kentucky, 68-64

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The UAB women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday night as Eastern Kentucky defeated the Blazers 68-64 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Anchorage.
Mia Moore had her first career double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds, and added four assists and four steals, but Eastern Kentucky had four players score in double figures, led by Antwainette Walker with 20.
Tracey Bershers had 13 points and Denim DeShields 11 in the loss.
The Blazers (2-1) led 20-19 after the opening 10 minutes as Bershers had six early points and Moore five. However, EKU (5-0) opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run and forced a UAB timeout with the Colonials leading 28-20.
Out of that timeout, UAB scored the next five points to get within three at 28-25. The two teams continued to trade baskets back and forth, and EKU took a 37-34 lead in the halftime break.
UAB came out of the locker room on fire and opened the third quarter on a 16-4 run to gain a 50-41 lead, forcing an EKU timeout with 3:50 left. However, the Colonials ended the quarter on an 8-0 run and the two teams enters the fourth quarter with UAB leading 50-49.
With the game tied 55-55, EKU went on a 9-2 run to seize control. The Blazers would get within four (65-61) with :23 left, but EKU continued to make free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
The Blazers will be back in action on Sunday night against the loser of No. 4 Utah and Alaska Anchorage.
