Blazers Outlast UTSA on Senior Night

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball concluded their home campaign in Bartow Arena with Senior Night Deja Vu. The Blazers claimed a four-set victory over UTSA, concluding the home front for the 2023 Season.
With sixteen tied scores and five lead changes throughout the match, the Blazers kept their foot on the gas through the final set to sit at a record of 5-25 and 3-15 in the AAC.
IN THE SETS
The match started with UAB taking control of set one with 14 kills and hitting .393. With an 11-3 lead, the Blazers put up three points for each one that the Roadrunners posted. The Blazers kept the momentum, only giving up three attack errors throughout the set before claiming the 25-18 victory.
Set two would be the only set the Blazers gave up, hitting .125. With UTSA leading 9-2 early in the second, the Blazers looked to rally back, taking advantage of errors from the Roadrunners to reach the ten-point mark. UTSA continued to maintain their lead, taking set two 25-12.
In the third set the Blazers and Roadrunners were within close quarters, seeing ten ties within the set alone. The Green and Gold started with a 4-0 run before UTSA responded with their run to tie at five. The score remained within a point of each other before UTSA blocked a momentum-shifting attack from Mia Reese. The Blazers continued to trail by two, down 18-20, before a Jorda Crook kill started a four-point run to put the Blazers ahead by two. The Green and Gold maintained the lead and set 25-22.
The final set was all UAB, with the Blazers and Roadrunners neck-and-neck early. With the score at 7-7, the Blazers started to pull away after a series of attack errors put the Green and Gold in front by three. UAB continued the run with a defensive and offensive effort, putting the Blazers up by six. With the Green and Gold first to reach 20, they maintained their lead, eventually claiming the set and match 25-17.
IN THE BOX
- Senior Lidya Canturk collected her 2500th Career Assist in a Blazer Uniform in set four. She tallied 21 assists.
- Four Blazers tallied double-digit kills: Asli Celikkol, Chloe Rodriguez, Kelsey Smith, and Mia Reese.
- Rodriguez hit a match-high .688 attack percentage.
- Kelsey Smith finished the match with her sixth career triple-double on the evening with 11 kills, 22 assists, and 18 digs.
- The Blazers finished with a .276 hitting percentage, hitting a match-high .406 in the final set.
- The Green and Gold tallied more kills, assists, blocks, and digs in the match than the Roadrunners. UTSA finished with more aces, with seven to UAB's six.
