UAB Prepares for 2023 Senior Night

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball concludes its home campaign in Bartow Arena on Friday, November 15 versus UTSA. The Green and Gold will honor three Blazers who have served on the team for Senior Night.
Anna Hewitt, Katy Schroeder, and Lidya Canturk take the home court for the final time in a Blazer uniform. The Green and Gold will take on the Roadrunners at 7 p.m.

SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
UTSA joins into the AAC for its first year, however, this isn't the first meeting between the Blazers and Roadrunners. The Green and Gold last played the Roadrunners during the 2022 season, where the Blazers won in a four-set match on Senior Night. The Green and Gold trail in the all-time series 4-13.
UTSA sits fifth in the AAC West with a record 8-9. Ranked third in the conference in points, averaging 16.74 per set. On the defensive, the Roadrunners rank first in blocks with 2.50 per set. Led by Alicia Coppedge with 108 blocks as of November 16, the senior finished with a season-high nine blocks in the team's loss to Wichita State on November 11.
In addition to blocks, the Roadrunners lead in aces with 1.80 per set. Against opponents, UTSA forces 1.798 reception errors per set and keeps them to a sub-.200 hitting percentage. Offensively, the Roadrunners are led by Coppedge, who averages 2.55 points per set, Mia Soerenson, who is leading in kills with 311, and Cansu Gunaydin, who averages 2.32 kills per set.
Against the Blazers, UTSA has lost the last two matches. The Blazers outperformed the Roadrunners in points, kills, aces, assists, and blocks in last year's meeting. Two Blazers finished in double-digit kills, with then-junior Lidya Canturk posting 49 of the team's 56 assists. UAB held UTSA to a hitting percentage of .076.

The Blazers celebrate Lidya Canturk, Anna Hewitt, and Katy Schroeder before the first serve. The Green and Gold will also honor manager Madison Watkins for her time serving and supporting the Blazers.
Senior Night festivities will start approximately 10 minutes before the match.
