Blazers Drop Friday Matchup Against UNT

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball concluded the first of two AAC Non-Divisional Matches. The Blazers fell to the North Texas Mean Green in straight sets on Friday evening in Bartow Arena.
The Green and Gold now sit at a record of 2-16 overall and 0-6 in the American Athletic Conference.
IN THE SETS
The match began with UAB taking the lead throughout the early stages of the first set. The Blazers jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, which continued despite a 4-0 run from the Mean Green to get within three. UNT continued their run, adding four more points and getting within one before tying at 19 and eventually getting within a set point. The Blazers responded with a 3-0 run before being halted by a UNT kill to close out set one, 25-22.
Set two mirrored the prior set, with UAB jumping to a 7-4 lead before UNT responded with a series of runs to get within range of the Blazers. The Green and Gold kept their distance before a 6-1 scoring run put North Texas ahead by two. The Blazers responded with a kill to close the gap to one point before going on another 2-1 run to tie at 19. The Blazers then took the lead at 22-20 before the Mean Green scored five consecutive points to take a 2-0 lead at the end of the second set.
The third and final set saw a 6-0 lead from UNT to start the match before the Blazers put up four points to UNT's one to get within three. The Mean Green maintained the lead before extending it to 12-6 and eventually 15-7. UAB would be unable to regain the lead for the duration of the set, getting within five in the final stages of the match before North Texas claimed the set and match.
IN THE BOX
- UAB finished with equal blocks to North Texas. The Mean Green and Blazers both totaled seven.
- Kelsey Smith finished with double-digit assists for the evening with 14. She was shy of a double-double with nine digs.
- The Blazers held UNT to a hitting percentage of .115, forcing 24 errors.
- Mia Reese finished with the highest hitting percentage on the squad with .261

UAB returns to Bartow Arena on Sunday, October 8, taking on Tulsa. First serve against the Golden Hurricane is 1 PM.
