UAB Volleyball Returns to Bartow for Non-Divisional Matchups

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball returns to Bartow Arena to take on old foes in the North Texas Mean Green and Tulsa for non-divisional AAC play on October 6 and 8. The Blazers come off two straight-set losses against South Florida in the second week of AAC play.
The Blazers return home with a record of 2-15, facing off against former C-USA opponents in North Texas and Tulsa. Between both teams, the Green and Gold are 7-22 all-time, with the Blazers revisiting the Golden Hurricane for the first time in a decade.

SCOUTING THE MEAN GREEN
North Texas comes in at a record 9-9 overall as first-year AAC members. The Mean Green took on the likes of Campbell, Colorado, Florida State, and UCF. UNT entered the AAC slate with three straight wins to open up the season before dropping match one versus the Golden Hurricane and went to five sets in the second match.
The Mean Green sits fifth in the AAC West, ranking third in conference play in hitting percentage with .237. They also rank third in assists and fifth in kills. Offensively, the Mean Green are led by Treyaunna Rush and Ceci Harness in kills and assists. Rush was named C-USA First Team in 2022, ranking third in the conference in kills with 423.
Harness, a sophomore, returns to the Mean Green with 406 assists on the season. She posted a season-high 33 assists in UNT's win over Campbell, in addition to posting twelve digs. Harness has finished with six double-doubles as of Sept. 29.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
Tulsa, who finished 13-18 in the 2022 season, enters the 2023 season 10-6 and 3-2 in the AAC. The Golden Hurricane was the first team to deliver losses to North Texas in the 2023 season, going four and five sets in each match. Tulsa ranks second in assists and digs and fourth in kills. Offensively, the Golden Hurricane totaled 793 kills, led by Kayley Cassaday.
Cassaday, who returns to Golden Hurricane as a graduate student, ranks fourth all-time in kills. She posted a career-high 35 kills over Sam Houston and sits at a hitting percentage of .275 as of Sept. 29.
Defensively, the Golden Hurricane are led by Marta Pecalli and Arianna Mongare. Pecalli leads in digs on the team with 259, while Mongare is the block leader with 56. She is followed by Camryn Lingenbrink with 52 blocks total as of this week. Lingenbrink ranks seventh in the conference in blocks, averaging 1.08 per set, while also being ranked sixth in hitting percentage.

Family and loved ones are encouraged to attend the Friday match versus the Mean Green. In addition to Family Weekend activities, the American Athletic Conference and Blazers take the initiative in Powerful Minds Night, to highlight and destigmatize mental health in student-athletes.

Fans who attend the Saturday afternoon matchup between UAB Football and USF and save their ticket stub gain $2 entry to the Sunday volleyball meeting between UAB and Tulsa.
