UAB Falls to Tulsa in Three-Setter

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball concluded the weekend with a loss to Tulsa on Sunday afternoon in Bartow Arena. The Blazers are now 2-17 overall and 0-7 in the AAC.
The Green and Gold held Tulsa to .186 in hitting percentage, forcing 19 errors and getting within three points of the Golden Hurricane to shift the momentum, but fell short. Two Blazers finished with double-digit kills on the day.
IN THE SETS
UAB struck first in set one with a pair of kills from Kelsey Smith. The Green and Gold led by as much as two before Tulsa responded with an 11-1 run to shift the momentum. The Blazers then rallied back, utilizing freshman Mia Reese and Smith to get within seven before the Blazers went on a 7-0 run to tie at 20. Tulsa responded with a 4-1 run, with UAB striking back with a block and kill to halt the set-claiming point. However, a kill from Tulsa's Bayless gave the Golden Hurricane set one, 25-23.
In the second set, Tulsa remained on the offensive run before UAB responded with its run to tie it at five. The Blazers regained control with a series of errors from the Golden Hurricane to put the Green and Gold up by two. Tulsa continued on the offensive before UAB responded with an offensive run to take the lead. Tulsa then went on a 7-0 run again to take the lead 22-18 before claiming set two, 25-21.
The final set was all Tulsa, with the Golden Hurricane maintaining the lead throughout the third. The Green and Gold would get within three but were unable to respond after a 6-1 run. A series of kills from the Green and Gold put the Blazers within six, but Tulsa remained in the lead and collected the set and match with a 25-17 win.
IN THE BOX
- Kelsey Smith and Mia Reese were the two Blazers to finish with double-digit kills.
- Smith finished with a triple-double in Kills, Assists and Digs, with 11-10-10. It would be her first career triple-double.
- The Green and Gold held the Golden Hurricane to a .186-hitting percentage. They outdug Tulsa 42-37.
- UAB also outhit the Golden Hurricane in set one, hitting .394 to Tulsa's .222.

The Blazers hit the road to Memphis to take on the Memphis Tigers on October 13 and 14 for Divisional AAC Play.
