UAB MBB Battles to 81-74 Win at Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. – UAB men's basketball (13-5, 4-3 C-USA) battled to an 81-74 win on the road at Louisiana Tech after trailing by eight with less than five minutes to go. UAB outscored the Bulldogs 19-4 over the last 4:20 to secure the win. Eric Gaines led the Blazers with 22 points, four rebounds and six assists.

The Blazers led for the majority of the first half, but Louisiana Tech would not let the margin go beyond six points. The Bulldogs went on a 11-3 run late in the first half to take a five-point lead of their own at 34-29. UAB closed the first half strong to cut it to just a 35-34 deficit at the half.

Nine different Blazers scored in the first half alone. Tavin Lovan led the way with eight points at the break. However, Lovan picked up his third foul just before the half.

UAB opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take a nine-point lead, the largest lead by either team throughout the game. The Bulldogs responded immediately with a quick 8-0 run over the next two minutes to get right back into the game.

Louisiana Tech took control of the game late in the second half, jumping out to an eight-point advantage with 4:46 left on the clock. A balanced UAB effort gave the Blazers life.

The Blazers went on an 11-0 run over the next two minutes, taking a 73-70 lead on Ty Brewer's third three-pointer of the night. Louisiana Tech scored the next four points to jump back in front, but that would be all that the Bulldogs would get. With the Blazers leading by three and 26 seconds remaining, Tony Toney stole the inbounds pass and passed it to Eric Gaines for two more free throws. Gaines knocked down both attempts to put the lead at five.

UAB closed the game on an 8-0 run while going 6-for-6 from the free throw line, including a 4-for-4 effort from Eric Gaines.

NOTES

The Blazers have won back-to-back games in Ruston after picking up their first road win against Louisiana Tech during the 2021-22 season.
The victory marks UAB's first road win of the season.
UAB is now 13-0 when holding opponents to fewer than 80 points.
Eric Gaines finished with a career-high 22 points. He was a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line, and he hit a career-best four three-pointers.
Tavin Lovan finished in double-figures for the second time this season. He had 11 points and six rebounds in his second start of the year.
Ty Brewer scored 11 points off the bench and went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Trey Jemison was just one rebound shy of a double-double at 11 points and nine rebounds.
Toney Toney score eight points and grabbed four rebounds in 15 minutes. He came up with the crucial steal that led UAB to the win.
