MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – UAB men's basketball (13-6, 4-4 C-USA) fell in an heartbreaker at Middle Tennessee (11-7, 4-3 C-USA), 74-73 in overtime. Trey Jemison led the Blazers with his third double-double in four games, scoring a career-high 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Blazers struggled from the floor all night, shooting only .316 (25-79) from the field, the lowest mark of the Andy Kennedy era. However, UAB grabbed 27 offensive rebounds, their most in a single game since the 2013-14 season.
Middle Tennessee contributed to the Blazers' offensive woes, blocking 12 shots, the most allowed by a UAB team since the 2014-15 season against FIU.
It was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than seven points. The contest featured 13 lead changes and seven ties.
UAB went ahead by seven late in the first half, 28-21, after an Eric Gaines four-point play, but Middle Tennessee responded with a 10-0 run to take a 31-28 lead before the half. Despite shooting .275 from the field in the first 20 minutes, the Blazers tied it up at 31 heading into the break.
MTSU led for nearly the entire second half. After halftime, the Blazers only lead was by one point on a Tavin Lovan layup with just over 14 minutes to go. However, it lasted for only one possession. Despite trailing for nearly the entire 20 minutes, the Blazers did not let the game slip away.
Down the stretch, UAB fought back into the game. Trailing by six with 2:33 to go, KJ Buffen scored five-straight points on back-to-back possessions to cut it to 63-62. After MTSU went back down the floor and hit a three of their own, Trey Jemison got to the free throw line and knocked down a couple key free throws with less than a minute to go.
For the second-consecutive game, Tony Toney came up with a key steal in crunch time. After the Blazers failed to score on what seemed to be their final possession, Toney stole the inbounds pass and got the ball to Eric Gaines, who hit each of his free throws to send it to overtime.
UAB jumped right in front in the overtime period. Eric Gaines hit a three on the first possession and Trey Jemison got a bucked on the second to give the Blazers a quick five-point advantage. Middle Tennessee worked the lead back to just one point with 48 seconds to go. Dishman was able to get to the free throw line for the Blue Raiders with 10 seconds remaining and he knocked down both attempts. Ty Brewer hit a jumper at the buzzer that appeared to give UAB the win, but it did not leave his hand before the horn sounded, giving MTSU a 74-73 victory.
