BIRMINGHAM - UAB men's soccer (2-6-0, 0-2-0 AAC) will host the first official American Athletic Conference contest in program history when the Blazers take on No. 18/12 Tulsa (5-1-1, 1-1-0) at PNC Field on Friday night at 7 p.m. CT. The match will stream live on ESPN+. The first 100 fans to arrive will receive rally towels, recognizing UAB's first home match in the league.
SERIES HISTORY
Tulsa leads the all-time series 11-3-1. The Golden Hurricane took the last meeting between the two teams in 2016 by a score of 1-0. The Blazers have not defeated Tulsa in Birmingham.
OFFICIALLY AAC
UAB men's soccer is the first of all Blazer programs to join the American Athletic Conference. While each of the other UAB programs will join the league in 2023, men's soccer became an affiliate member for the 2022 season due to C-USA no longer supporting men's soccer.
COMMON OPPONENTS
The two sides have each faced off with Wisconsin and Charlotte early in the season. UAB fell to Wisconsin at home 2-0 while Tulsa was trailing 3-0 against the Badgers before the game was called in the 68th minute. The Blazers fell 3-0 against Charlotte while Tulsa picked up a 2-0 victory.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BLAZERS
The Blazers fell in Boca Raton, Fla. against FAU. After a scoreless 80 minutes, the Owls broke through with a go-ahead goal that proved to be the difference.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
Tulsa boasts a high-powered attack, and the Golden Hurricane are coming off a 2-0 victory over No. 11 Charlotte on Sunday. Eight different players have found the back of the net, but Alex Meinhard and Malik Henry-Scott lead the way with five and four goals, respectively. Additionally, the defense has picked up three shutouts on the season.
RETURNING PRODUCTION
The Blazers return three of their top four goal scorers from the 2021 campaign in Nathaniel St. Louis, Brooks Rice and Curtis DeLeon. Also returning is Teodor Thorvaldsen who led the team with four assists.
WE'RE ALL FROM SOMEWHERE
UAB men's soccer has student-athletes from six states and eight different countries (Norway, Canada, Germany, Spain, Israel, Hungary, Austria). Alabama is the most well-represented state with nine Blazers and Norway is the most well-represented country outside of the U.S. with three players (Thorvaldsen, Love Groth, Overland).
LOTS OF NEW FACES
UAB brings in many new faces for the 2022 season. The Blazers added 19 newcomers during the offseason to add depth to the rotation.
THE VETERANS
Brooks Rice, Nathaniel St. Louis and Curtis DeLeon have led the way for UAB so far on the offensive end. St. Louis leads the Blazers with three goals on the year while Rice has added two of his own. DeLeon has assisted on four of UAB's seven goals. His four assists are tied for the most by a Blazer since 2015.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
UAB will be facing off with its fourth ranked opponent of the season when the Blazers take on No. 18/12 Tulsa. Future opponents Memphis and SMU are also ranked while UCF is receiving votes.
