UAB Travels to Alabama State on Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team will travel to Montgomery to take on Alabama State for an in-state matchup on Tuesday night. First pitch for Tuesday's game at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex is set for 6 p.m.

UAB (27-19, 11-13 C-USA) went 2-2 this past week, earning a 7-1 midweek victory at Jacksonville State before dropping two games out of three at WKU this past weekend. The Blazers improved to 6-3 in midweek games with their win over the Gamecocks, scoring five runs in the eighth inning to pull away from JSU at Jim Case Stadium.
After dropping Friday's game to WKU, the Blazers responded with its second 7-1 victory of the week. Leo Harris shined once again on Saturday, earning his second win in as many weekend starts by going eight innings while allowing just one run and six hits. Harris struck out six Hilltoppers without surrendering a walk, tossing a career-high 102 pitches in the stellar outing. Josh Sears led the Blazers at the plate with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, stretching UAB's lead to 7-1.
The Hilltoppers would clinch the series with a 5-3 win on Sunday, holding off a UAB rally to take two games out of three from the Blazers. Sears and Caleb Floyd led the Blazers at the plate on Sunday, combining to drive in all three of UAB's runs.
Offensively, Christian Hall continues to lead the Blazers in batting average (.370), OPS (1.026), hits (57), total bases (91) and slugging percentage (.591). Centerfielder Darryl Buggs, who has started all 24 of UAB's Conference USA games in center field, leads the Blazers with a .325 batting average in league play.
On the mound, UAB ranks third in Conference USA with a 4.47 team ERA. Eleven different Blazer pitchers have earned pitching victories this season, highlighted by freshman reliever Thomas Ballard, who holds a team-best 6-1 record in 19 appearances.
Alabama State (24-21, 15-7 SWAC) holds a 17-5 record at home this season. The Hornets have three hitters batting over .300 this season, highlighted by sophomore infielder Corey King. King leads Alabama State in batting average (.360), hits (67), RBI (46), runs scored (47), home runs (11) and triples (three). As a team, the Hornets sport a 5.19 team ERA with 380 strikeouts and 230 walks allowed.
UAB leads the series 31-6, holding a 13-6 advantage in games played in Montgomery. The Blazers have won the past five games in the series, including a 3-2 victory at home on March 9.
