MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UAB baseball team scored four runs with two outs in the 11th inning to notch an 8-4 victory at Alabama State on Tuesday night. The Blazers improved to 7-3 in midweek games this season with the win in extra innings, finishing their five-game road trip with a 3-2 record.
With two outs in the top of the 11th, UAB's Peyton Puckett earned his way on base after being hit by a pitch. He then stole second to put a runner in scoring position for third baseman Brandon Willoughby, who singled through the left side to put UAB (28-19) in front 5-4. A throwing error on Alabama State's left fielder then helped Willoughby to score on his go-ahead single, making it 6-4. The Blazers then tacked on a pair of insurance runs when Henry Hunter blasted a two-out, two-run home run to right field to make it 8-4.
UAB reliever Collin Taylor logged the final nine outs for the Blazers in Tuesday's comeback victory, allowing no hits and just one walk with three strikeouts in the dominant bullpen performance. Taylor moved to 2-0 on the season in Tuesday's triumph, lowering his ERA to 2.05 and his WHIP to 0.77.
Alabama State (24-22) struck first in Tuesday's game, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Tyler O'Clair limited the damage for the Blazers after entering the game with the bases loaded and just one out, inducing a groundout and striking out Alabama State's Jabronski Williams to allow just one Hornet to score.
The Blazers captured their first lead of the game with two outs in the fifth when Josh Sears belted a three-run home run to right center, turning a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead. Sears' team-best 13th homer of the season also increased his RBI total to 50 runs batted in for the season. After Alabama State retired the first two batters of the inning, John Marc Mullins singled and Darryl Buggs drew a four-pitch walk to keep the inning alive.
UAB loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Hornets escaped the bases-loaded situation when Caleb Floyd flied out to center field on a 1-1 count. Catcher Joseph Kiel and Sears walked in the seventh, while Mullins recorded his second single in as many at-bats.
Alabama State took the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Kyler McIntosh delivered a two-out RBI single to left field, giving the Hornets a 4-3 lead. The Blazers, however, would tie the game in their next at-bat when Willoughby scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and two outs. Willoughby singled with one out in the eighth inning to spark the late rally, tying the game at 4-4.
Relievers Jonah Smith and Taylor would combine to toss three scoreless innings to keep the game tied from the bottom of the eighth through the bottom of the 10th before UAB plated four runs in the 11th inning to take the lead for good.
Five UAB batters logged multi-hit performances in Tuesday's win, highlighted by three-hit performances from Mullins and Willoughby. Sears and Hunter each tallied multi-RBI games with a three-run homer and two-run homer, respectively.
The Blazers will return to Young Memorial Field this weekend for their final three home games of the 2022 season against FIU. UAB's final C-USA home series will begin on Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
