Willoughby Named to Conference USA All-Academic Team

DALLAS – UAB third baseman Brandon Willoughby was named to the Conference USA Baseball All-Academic Team on Monday afternoon.
Willoughby, a junior from Cataula, Georgia, also earned a spot on the 2022 C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll in his first year at UAB. The third baseman holds a 3.74 GPA as he pursues a bachelor's degree in kinesiology.
Willoughby is UAB's first honoree on the Conference USA All-Academic Team since teammates Carter Pharis and Brett Blackwood earned the accolades in 2018.
The first-year UAB infielder finished the 2022 regular season with a .263 batting average, six doubles, three home runs, 25 RBI and 28 runs scored. He tallied 13 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI performances in 52 contests this season.
In UAB's first home Conference USA series against Middle Tennessee, Willoughby went 2-for-4 in the series finale with a walk-off home run in UAB's 6-5 win over the Blue Raiders. He also went 3-for-4 with a go-ahead two-RBI single against then No. 4 Southern Miss, which helped UAB clinch a series victory over a top-five opponent for the first time since 2009.
Willoughby and UAB (31-23) will now head to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to compete in postseason play for the first time since 2018. The eighth-seeded Blazers will open the Conference USA Tournament against top-seeded Southern Miss (41-14) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Wednesday's game at Pete Taylor Park will stream live on ESPN+.
