BIRMINGHAM- UAB softball will host Western Kentucky this weekend for a three-game series at Mary Bowers Field. The two squads will face off Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 1:00 p.m., and Sunday at noon.
"Another great opportunity to compete and win in big moments," said Joe Guthrie. "We are working very hard to take advantage of the opportunities we've earned."
UAB LATELY
The Blazers (20-13, 8-1) are looking to get back to their winning ways, after an upset bid against the top ranked Oklahoma Sooners fell short last Saturday. Freshman Bella Wiggins leads the Blazers in batting average with a .341 percentage, Lilly Crowe leads the squad in homeruns with four including a grand slam, and Sierra Frazier paces UAB with 26 RBIs. Sarah Cespedes (8-3) is coming off a strong performance this past weekend, holding the nation's top hitting team to six hits on Saturday. UAB is currently ranked first in Conference USA standings.
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS
Western Kentucky (25-7, 9-3) is looking to take control of Conference USA this weekend and will rely on talents such as pitcher Shelby Nunn (14-5) to do so. Nunn is the reigning C-USA pitcher of the week and has 83 strikeouts this year. Bailey Curry has 7 homeruns on the year. As a team, WKU has the lowest ERA in the conference (2.76).
The last time UAB and Western Kentucky played, it was in the 2021 Conference USA championship game. On Wednesday, both teams were supposed to host midweek games but with inclement weather and poor field conditions, both games were canceled. UAB and WKU are each leading their respective conference divisions.
