BIRMINGHAM – After a road trip to defending Conference USA regular season champion Charlotte this past weekend, the UAB baseball team will return to Young Memorial Field Friday to open a three-game C-USA series against No. 4 Southern Miss. This weekend's series against the Golden Eagles marks the first of two final conference series played in Birmingham for the 2022 season.
Friday's series opener is set to begin at 6 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+. Saturday and Sunday's matchups will stream live on CUSA.tv with start times of 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. Live stats for all three games are available by clicking here.
With four Conference USA series remaining, the Blazers (23-16, 8-10 C-USA) are currently tied with Marshall for eighth place in the league. UAB holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Thundering Herd, which could determine the eighth and final spot in the Conference USA Tournament played in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, from May 26-30.
After completing a season sweep of Alabama on April 19, UAB suffered its first sweep of the season at Charlotte this past weekend. The Blazers mustered only six runs in three games against the 49ers, dropping only their third weekend series of the season.
Christian Hall continues to lead the Blazers in several hitting categories, including batting average (.377), OPS (1.063), hits (52), slugging percentage (.623) and total bases (86). Josh Sears maintains his spot as the Blazers' leader in home runs (10) and RBI (37). John Marc Mullins, who has recorded a hit in a team-high seven straight games, leads UAB with 33 runs scored.
On the mound, the Blazers will send their usual Friday and Sunday starters to the mound. Jackson Reynolds (2-4, 2.91 ERA) and Brooks Walton (5-2, 4.41 ERA) will start for UAB on Friday and Sunday, while Saturday's starter is to be determined. Reynolds' 2.91 ERA ranks sixth among qualifying pitchers in Conference USA.
Southern Miss (33-8, 16-2 C-USA) has won a program-record 15 straight games, dropping its only contest of April 4-2 at home to Louisiana Tech back on April 2. The Golden Eagles' dominant pitching staff leads Conference USA in ERA (2.83), strikeouts (472), saves (17) lowest opposing batting average (.219) and fewest walks (106). The Golden Eagles' 15-game winning streak is the third longest active streak in Division I.
The last time UAB knocked off a top-five opponent was when the Blazers defeated No. 5 Rice 6-5 on May 13, 2012. UAB's last series win against a top-five opponent also came against the Owls, winning two games out of three against No. 4 Rice from May 14-16, 2009.
