BIRMINGHAM – Streak snapped.
The UAB baseball team knocked off No. 4 Southern Miss 10-6 on Friday night at Young Memorial Field, snapping the Golden Eagles' 15-game winning streak. UAB's win over Southern Miss marked the Blazers' first win over a top-five opponent since a 6-5 win over No. 5 Rice on May 13, 2012.
After Southern Miss (33-9, 16-3 C-USA) took a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning, Caleb Floyd once again answered for the Blazers (24-16, 9-10 C-USA) in the bottom half, clearing the bases with an RBI single to center field. Floyd's line drive brought home Darryl Buggs from third and Josh Sears from second to tie the game at 6-6. An error on Southern Miss' centerfielder then helped Christian Hall round the bases all the way from first, putting the Blazers in the lead for good.
Aidan Moza then entered the game for the Blazers in the eighth, posting a scoreless frame with the help of clutch fielding from John Marc Mullins, who helped turn an acrobatic 4-6-3 double play to put two down in the inning.
Following Moza's scoreless frame, Sears stepped to the plate with runners on first and second and two outs in the eighth. After watching the first pitch for a ball, he unloaded on a 1-0 pitch for a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left field. Sears' three-run homer provided the Blazers with three insurance runs in the eighth, giving UAB a 10-6 lead entering the ninth.
After a one-out single from Southern Miss' Gabe Montenegro, Moza sealed the win for the Blazers with a 6-4-3 ground-ball double play. Moza's two scoreless innings of relief marked his first save of his UAB career.
Southern Miss took the game's first lead in the first with a two-run homer from Christopher Sargent. The Blazers then tied the game in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly from Brandon Willoughby and an RBI single from Matthew Golda.
Floyd then put the Blazers ahead UAB's next at-bat with a solo shot to right field, giving UAB a 3-2 advantage. The Golden Eagles once again took the lead with another two-run homer when Will McGillis smacked a two-out homer to left center.
The Blazers and Golden Eagles traded runs in the sixth and seventh to give Southern Miss a 6-4 lead entering the seventh-inning stretch. Floyd's bases-clearing hit came after back-to-back four-pitch walks with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Floyd led the Blazers with a 4-for-5 day at the plate, falling just a triple short of the cycle. Floyd tied with Sears with a team-leading three RBI. He also paced the Blazers with three runs scored.
UAB's win over Southern Miss also marked the Blazers' first win over a ranked opponent since UAB defeated No. 17 Louisiana Tech in Ruston this past season.
The Blazers will go for the series win over the Golden Eagles on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and will stream live on CUSA.tv.
