4/20/2022 12:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM – UAB head men's basketball coach Andy Kennedy has announced the addition of Binghamton transfer Tyler Bertram to the roster. Bertram, who will enter his fifth season of college basketball with the Blazers in 2022-23, appeared in 47 games with 31 starts the past two seasons at Binghamton.
Bertram joins Eric Gaines, Javian Davis, Ledarrius and Ty Brewer, and Efrem "Butta" Johnson as the six student-athletes Kennedy has added to the 2022-23 UAB men's basketball roster.
"As we were putting the pieces of this recruiting puzzle together, Tyler came to the forefront with his ability to make shots," Kennedy said. "Last year's team was the 10th most efficient 3-point shooting team in the country, and Tyler will help us in our efforts to continue that efficiency.
"His ability to stretch the defense is invaluable to our quest to repeat as conference champions."
In his first season at Binghamton in 2020-21, Bertram appeared in all 18 games with 13 starts. The Cooperstown, New York native averaged 10.8 points in 28 minutes per game, ranking second on the team in points scored per game. Bertram shot 35% from behind the 3-point line, drilling a team-high 40 3-pointers (fourth in the America East) and shooting a team-best 88% from the free-throw line.
Bertram made two 3-pointers 11 times in 2020-21, drilling four triples in four different games. He scored 15 points or more five times, highlighted by a season-high 20 points at UMass Lowell on Jan. 16, 2021. The future Blazer also netted 19 points at Hartford on Jan. 3, 2021, converting 4-of-6 shots from behind the 3-point line.
The 6-3 guard played in all 29 games with 18 starts this past season at Binghamton, averaging 9.0 points per game and leading the Bearcats with 59 made 3-points. Bertram shot 39% from behind the 3-point line in 2021-22, drilling a season-high seven 3-pointers to score a career-high 29 points in just 25 minutes at Columbia on Nov. 17. Bertram's 29-point performance was one of his 12 games reaching double figures in scoring.
Bertram spent the first two seasons of his college career at Charlotte, playing in 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2019-20. He played a season-high 18 minutes at Rice on Feb. 15, 2020, dishing out three assists.
In high school, Bertram was a three-year standout at Cooperstown High School, pouring in a school-record 1,897 points for his father and head coach, David Bertram. The Cooperstown, New York native also holds school records for career 3-pointers (264), assists (417) and steals (181). He also set a single-game scoring record with 55 points against Moravia in the 2016 New York State playoff quarterfinals.
