4/18/2022 3:31:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM – UAB head men's basketball coach Andy Kennedy has announced the addition of SEC transfer Javian Davis to the roster. Davis, a former Canton High School star who spent the past two seasons at Mississippi State, joins Eric Gaines, Ledarrius and Ty Brewer, and Efrem "Butta" Johnson as the five student-athletes Kennedy has added to the 2022-23 UAB men's basketball roster.
Davis, a 6-9 forward from Canton, Mississippi, spent the first two seasons of his college basketball career at Alabama, averaging 6.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 59.4% from the field as a redshirt freshman. The future Blazer recorded a career day against South Carolina on Feb. 29, 2020, pulling down a season-high 20 points and 10 rebounds in a 90-86 win over the Gamecocks.
Davis also tallied a 19-point, nine-rebound performance in a win over Florida Atlantic (Nov. 11, 2019), a 13-point, eight-rebound effort in a win over Georgia (Feb. 8, 2020) and an 11-point, three-block performance against Arkansas (Feb. 1, 2020). The Crimson Tide went 7-2 in games when Davis scored in double figures.
"Javian Davis adds size, strength, experience and production to our front line," Kennedy said. "His four years in the SEC has prepared him to be in position to make an immediate impact in our program.
"I've known Javian since his high school years in Canton, and I can't wait to see him in Green and Gold!"
After transferring to Mississippi State for the 2020-21 season, Davis averaged 2.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.5 assists in his first season with the Bulldogs. He made 29 appearances and one start in his first year in Starkville, scoring a season-high 11 points to go along with five rebounds against Jackson State. He also provided five points, seven rebounds and two assists against Kentucky in MSU's SEC opener on Jan. 2, 2021.
In 2021-22, Davis appeared in 32 games with one start for the Bulldogs, averaging 3.5 points and 2.3 rebounds. He poured in 12 points to go along with six rebounds in Mississippi State's 88-72 victory over Georgia on Jan. 12. Davis also scored a season-high 13 points with seven made free throws against Colorado State, who later made the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
Davis also starred at Canton High School, averaging 17.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game as a senior. He earned First Team All-State honors from USA Today and Second Team All-State accolades from the Jackson-Clarion Ledger. Davis helped lead Canton High School to a 29-4 record and a 5A state semifinals appearance in 2017-18.
The future Blazer chose UAB over Tulane, Tulsa, Loyola Chicago and Georgetown.
Davis signing with the Blazers marks Kennedy's sixth Power Five transfer landed since taking over the UAB men's basketball program in March 2020. Kennedy has signed student-athletes from Clemson (Trey Jemison), Ole Miss (KJ Buffen), LSU (Eric Gaines and Josh LeBlanc, Sr.) and Auburn (Jamal Johnson) through the transfer portal before the 2020-21, 2021-22 seasons and 2022-23 seasons.
