Three-Run Sixth Inning Secures UAB’s Win Over Alabama State

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team picked up its first midweek win of the season versus Alabama State on Wednesday at Young Memorial Field, 3-2. UAB improves to 9-3 on season.
Thomas Ballard (2-1) secured his second win of the season. Ballard came in and pitched 4.1 innings in relief, allowing only two hits with two strikeouts and no runs. Dalton Skinner (2) earned his second save of the year.
After back-to-back three up, three down innings for both innings, Alabama State (6-8) got on the board first in the third. With runners on first and second, an RBI single. The Hornets added a run in the fourth on a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead.
With bases loaded in the sixth, Christian Hall sent a single through the right side to drive in two runs to tie the game. Henry Hunter hit the go-ahead single to put the Blazers up 3-2.
The Blazers had a chance to add insurance runs in the seventh with two on and two out, but a strikeout ended the inning.
In the top of the ninth, Alabama State had a pair of runners in scoring position as the Blazers headed to the bullpen. Skinner came in and recorded the final out for the one-run victory, 3-2.
The Blazers are back on the diamond on Friday versus Belmont to begin at three-game series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
