BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's golf team moved up four places in the final round of the Desert Mountain Collegiate to finish in a tie for first place overall in Scottsdale on Sunday.
The first place finish continues UAB's excellent season as the Blazers now have an overall record 79-15-3. In four spring tournaments, UAB has finished in second place twice, third and fourth overall.
"I'm really proud of the way the guys carried themselves today," head coach Matt Whall said. "The course was very different to what we are used to seeing and they steadily got more comfortable and the belief started to grow. There were some big individual performances that really show the depth we have."
Khavish Varadan led the Blazers by tying for eighth place overall at +1. Varadan opened the tournament with a one under 71, and followed that with consecutive rounds of 73 (+1) and finished three shots off the individual title.
Ethan Hagood continued his strong play on the West coast trip by tying for 15th place overall at +4. Hagood saved his best round for last by shooting a two under 70 and moved up 21 spots in the final 18 holes.
Freshman Paul Bruce notched his first top 20 finish of his career by placing 19th overall. Bruce (71-78-72 = 221) finished at +5 overall and moved up 11 spots in the final round.
Alfie Fox and Nick Robillard rounded out UAB's lineup as both tied for 39th overall at +10. Robillard's final round of one under moved him up 21 spots on Sunday.
The host institution, Michigan, won the tournament at +9, which was four strokes ahead of UAB and Little Rock. Nebraska (+15) and Mississippi State (+16) rounded out the top five.
The Blazers are off next weekend and return to the course at The Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., March 18-20.
