Walton Throws Gem in UAB Run-Rule of Alabama A&M

BIRMINGHAM — Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Brooks Walton threw a complete-game two-hitter on the way to a run-rule win for the UAB baseball team over Alabama A&M, 12-1, after seven innings. The Blazers improve to 8-3 on the season.
The run-rule in the first Blazers since May 23, 2015 versus Florida Atlantic. UAB beat the Owls 10-0 in the contest.
Walton (2-0) threw 7.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run with two strikeouts. The Gainesville, Fla. native faced one batter over the minimum in the contest.
John Marc Mullins led off the Blazers in the top of the first with a solo home run out to left. Back-to-back singles by Matthew Golda and Josh Sears and a throwing error by the Bulldogs that allowed Golda to score made it a 2-0 game. A sac fly by Christian Hall and three walks in a row brought the score to 5-0 after the first.
The Blazers added an insurance run in the third on a homer by Henry Hunter, his third of the season, for the 6-0 advantage.
UAB put up another cricked number in the fourth, sending nine batters to the plate and driving in four runs. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Christian Hall and Caleb Floyd to bring the score to 10-0.
Alabama A&M (1-8) broke up the perfect game for Walton on a single in the fifth. The base runner was out in the next at bat on a 6-4-3 double play to keep Walton at the minimum batters faced through five.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Green and Gold tacked on another run when Darryl Buggs came around to score on throwing error by the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs lone run came in the top of the sixth on a leadoff home run by Jared Tribbet.
In the home half of the inning, three walks loaded the bases and a wild pitch by the Alabama A&M pitcher allowed Hunter to score.
A 1-2-3 inning by Walton and the Blazer defense preserved the one run, two-hit game and the run rule victory over Alabama A&M, 12-1.
