Blazers Open a Five Game Week with Samford, Alabama State

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team begins a five game week at Young Memorial Field with a pair of matchups against Samford on Tuesday and Alabama State on Wednesday. Both games are set for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
PITCHING PROBABLES
Tuesday: LHP Carson Knight (0-0, 9.53 ERA) vs. RHP Brody Westbrooks (0-0, 5.27 ERA)

UAB VS. SAMFORD
The game on Tuesday marks the 91st meeting all-time between UAB and Samford. The Blazers lead the all-time record, 58-32. The teams met twice last season and Samford won both of the meeting at Regions Field and in Homewood.
This is the first time this season that current UAB head coach Casey Dunn will face his former team. Dunn led the Samford baseball program for 17 seasons before being named the Blazers' head coach on June 23, 2021. Over the 17 seasons, Dunn held a 530-422 record with the Bulldogs and made three NCAA regional appearances with three Southern Conference Championships.
UAB VS. ALABAMA STATE
The game marks the 37th all-time meeting between the two programs. UAB leads the series, 30-6 with a 17-0 record in Birmingham. This is the first meeting between UAB and Alabama State since Feb. 26, 2020.
THE LAST TIME OUT
The Blazers are coming off its third series win to open the season over Alabama A&M. UAB won 2-of-3 in the series and outscored the Bulldogs, 33-17, over the three games. On the season, UAB has a record of 8-3.
Senior Caleb Floyd leads the Blazers at the plate with a .457 average. Floyd's batting average ranks first in Conference USA and 51st nationally over the first three weekends of play. The Birmingham native also has the top mark in conference with 21 hits on the season, that number also ranks 15th in the nation.
SCOUTING SAMFORD
The Bulldogs are 7-4 on the season. Samford opened with five straight wins with a series sweep of Arkansas State and a midweek win over Alabama State. The Bulldogs have a Top-10 win over No. 10 Florida State in Tallahassee in extra innings.
At the plate, Samford is led by Towns King with a .381 batting average. King leads the team with 16 hits, three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBIs.
SCOUTING ALABAMA STATE
The Hornets have a record of 6-7 to open the season. Alabama State is coming off a series sweep over St. Bonaventure, where they scored outscored the Bonnies 40-11 over the three games.
Alabama State is led at the plate by Angel Jimenez with a .469 batting average. Jimenez also leads the team with three home runs, three doubles and 12 RBIs. Chris Lewis and Corey King lead the Hornets with 19 hits on the year.
