Softball Sweeps Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG- The UAB softball team secured a series sweep versus Southern Miss today, coming out on top in a 7-6 extra inning contest in Hattiesburg.
"I have never been prouder of a team I've coached," said head coach Joe Guthrie. "They are tough. They are fighters. I am trying to cherish every moment with them."
Both teams failed to record a hit in the first two innings. In the bottom of the third, Southern Miss (18-15, 1-8) threatened to score, when the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with two outs on the board. However, USM couldn't bring anyone home, and Sarah Cespedes got a swinging strikeout to end the inning. In the top of the fourth, UAB (20-11, 8-1) struck first on a Sierra Frazier RBI that scored Faith Hegh. In the bottom of the fourth, Southern Miss responded, and took the lead with two RBI singles, and a sac-fly that brought the score to 3-1.
In the 5th inning, the Blazers stranded Lauren Brock and Lindsey Smith on base, and the Golden Eagles went three up three down. Down by two in the top of the sixth, UAB retook control of the game, thanks to an Alyssa Aguilar double the brought home Sierra Frazier, and Faith Hegh. UAB took the lead when Lauren Brock hit an RBI single that allowed Chloe Bahruth to score. Southern Miss tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth with a sac-fly. Tyler Armistead made a diving catch in foul territory to end the USM scoring run in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Blazers nearly put the game away, when Sierra Frazier smashed a home run to centerfield that also scored Faith Hegh, who got on base with a double. In the bottom of the sixth, the home team sent the ballgame into extra innings with an RBI single, and a walking RBI that put the game at 6-6 heading into the 8th.
The Blazers went right to work in the extra inning period, with a Bella Wiggins double that brought home Lauren Brock for what became the game sealing run. Southern Miss was in position to steal the victory thanks to a two out rally that loaded the bases, but UAB secured the series sweep with a fly out to win the game 7-6.
The Blazers put 12 hits on the board, and totaled 28 hits for the weekend, including 10 triples. UAB deployed four pitchers throughout the game. Olivia Valbak (3-4) picked up the win. Valbak entered the game in the bottom of the seventh, after playing shortstop for the first six innings. Sarah Cespedes recorded four strikeouts. UAB played a clean game in the field, recording no errors.
Today's win gave UAB its second Conference USA sweep of the season. The Blazers will travel to Norman, OK to take #1 Oklahoma weekend on Friday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m.
