UAB Softball Falls to #1 Oklahoma

NORMAN-Β TheΒ UAB softball team fell 11-1 in five innings tonight at #1 Oklahoma. The Blazers (20-12, 8-1) made some solid plays and pushed hard, but were ultimately overwhelmed by the Sooner batters.Β
UAB got on base in the top of the first on a wild pitch but couldn't score. Oklahoma (31-0, 3-0) couldn't score either in the bottom of the first. UAB couldn't get any runs in the top of the second despite a single from Lilly Crowe, and OU took a 2-0 lead with a homerun toΒ centerfieldΒ in the bottom of the second.Β
UAB responded in the top of the third, when a fielder's choice instigated by Lilly Crowe brought home Tyler Armistead. Jocelyn Alo put OU up 3-1 in the bottom of the third with a solo home run toΒ centerfield.Β
After the Blazers couldn't score in the top of the fourth, OU added to its lead when Alo was hit by a pitch when the bases were loaded, and a catcher's interference allowed the Sooners to go up 5-1. After UAB couldn't score in the top of the 5th, OU ended the game with a 2 RBI single, and aΒ walk offΒ grand slam that finished the game 11-1 in favor of Oklahoma.Β
Tyler ArmisteadΒ hit a double in the top of the third. Olivia ValbakΒ (3-5) was given the pitching loss, in an effort that saw her strikeout four batters in 3.2 innings of work against arguably the nation's best hitting team.Β
UAB will take on Oklahoma again tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in Norman.
