Softball Wins Again at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG- The UAB softball team was victorious once again at Southern Miss, defeating the Golden Eagles 4-2.
The Blazers (19-11, 7-1) struck first, when Sierra Frazier scored Bella Wiggins on a sac-fly in the top of the first. Southern Miss (18-14, 1-7) was unable to get any hits in the bottom of the first. UAB added to its lead in the top of the second, with a sac-fly from Lindsey Smith that brought home Lauren Brock. USM went three-up three down in the bottom of the second, and both teams went 0 for 3 in the third. In the top of the fourth, The Blazers scored again, with an RBI single from Jolie Readeaux that brought home Lauren Brock. After Southern Miss went three up, three down in the bottom of the fourth, UAB stranded Lilly Crowe on first base in the top of the fifth.
Southern Miss got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, with a home run to left field that brought the score to 3-1. UAB was able to answer in the top of the sixth, with a Bella Wiggins RBI single that brought home Lindsey Smith.
Southern Miss struck right back in the bottom of the sixth with another home run to center field. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases, and threatened to take the lead, but in a key moment, the UAB defense held firm. The Blazers made a double play, with a fly ball and a throw-out to second base. Holding a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh, UAB got a runner on base, but couldn't score. Southern Miss fought hard to even the score in their final chance at bat, but struck out swinging twice, and grounded out to give UAB the 4-2 victory.
Bella Wiggins and Lindsey Smith each hit a double today. Makenna Pierce (5-2) picked up the pitching win against her former team, to go with four strikeouts.
UAB will look to secure a sweep against Southern Miss in the final game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
