Softball Gets Comeback Win in Game 1 Versus Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG- The UAB softball team defeated Southern Miss in dramatic fashion Friday night. The Blazers were down 3-0 in the top of the sixth, but scored four unanswered runs to take the victory.
UAB (18-11, 6-1) went three up, three down to begin the game. Southern Miss (18-13, 1-6) got a runner on third with a triple in the bottom of the first and got another runner on first with a walk, but UAB got a line out sandwiched between two Olivia Valbak strikeouts to deny any runs for the Golden Eagles.
The game remained scoreless for the second and third innings. After the Blazers left Faith Hegh stranded on first base in the top of the fourth, it was USM who struck first. Southern Miss put two runs on the board on a throwing error by UAB. After UAB left Lindsey Smith and Lauren Brock stranded, Southern Miss added another run on a SAC-fly that pushed the lead to 3-0.
Staring down a three-run deficit, the Blazers rose to the occasion. Faith Hegh reached on a fielder's choice, then advanced to second on an error, and Bella Wiggins ran past third and scored on the error. Next up, Sierra Frazier got a 2 RBI single that brought home Hegh and Tyler Armistead. After UAB held off the Golden Eagles but failed to add a run in the sixth and seventh, the game went to extra innings. In the top of the 8th, UAB got on base with a leadoff single from Faith Hegh but couldn't get anything else going. In the bottom of the 8th, USM threatened with a single and subsequent wild pitch, and two walks. With two outs on the board and the bases loaded, Sarah Cespedes (8-2) struck out the Golden Eagle batter to keep the game knotted at 3-3. In the top of the ninth, a Lindsey Smith double got UAB on base, and a Bella Wiggins RBI double scored Smith to give UAB its first lead of the game. UAB left two runners stranded on base but went into the top of the ninth leading by one. Southern Miss had their final shot to score, but the Blazer defense denied them, with two quick outs, and a conclusive swinging strikeout from Sarah Cespedes.
UAB had seven hits in the game, with Bella Wiggins and Lindsey Smith each getting a double. Sarah Cespedes was the heroine of the day, striking out five batters in 5.2 innings of work. One of Cespedes's strikeouts ended the 8th inning when the bases were loaded, and her final strikeout clinched the Blazer victory.
UAB will take on Southern Miss again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
