BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team suffered an 8-1 setback this evening against #4 Alabama at Mary Bowers Field. The Blazers hung with the Tide in front of a sold-out crowd, and put a run along with five hits on the board, but errors and missed scoring opportunities ultimately led to a sixth inning scoring run that gave Alabama the victory.
The Blazers (17-11) put the Tide on the ropes early, retiring the Alabama (25-4) batters quickly, and then taking a 1-0 lead on a Faith Hegh single to left field that scored Bella Wiggins. Alabama tied the game in the top of the second with an RBI bunt. No runs were scored for either team in the third inning. The Blazers were positioned well in the fourth inning with the bases loaded, but were grounded out to end the inning, and the scoring opportunity. Alabama took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth, on a fielding error by UAB. The Blazers went three up, three down in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth inning, Alabama got their hitting game going, plating six runs with a walk when the bases were loaded, a fielding error in the outfield that allowed the Crimson Tide to get two runners home, an RBI single to right field that netted an extra run on a fielding error, and a single RBI to centerfield. The scoring run ended when Lindsey Smith made an outstanding diving catch in foul territory. UAB went three up, three down in the bottom of the sixth. Alabama left a runner stranded on first and scored no runs in the top of the seventh. UAB had one final chance to score but left two runners on base when the final Blazer batter was grounded out to end the game with a final score of 8-1.
Olivia Valbak (2-4) was given the pitching loss. UAB deployed four pitchers in total throughout the game. Lauren Brock stole one base.
UAB will be on the road this weekend for a three-game series versus Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
