BIRMINGHAM – Christian Hall's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the UAB baseball team over Alabama 5-4 on Wednesday night at Regions Field.
Josh Sears was 2-of-4 with a two-run home run and a double to lead off the eighth which put a runner in scoring position for Hall. The win improves UAB's overall record to 14-5.
"I think the biggest thing is that we threw eight different pitchers who all threw strikes," said head coach Casey Dunn. "I thought we commanded the strike zone well. We played really clean defensively and got some big hits and some big bunts down. All in all, I am really happy with how we executed the game tonight."
UAB struck in the bottom of the first inning as Sears launched his team-leading seventh home run of the season to left center. His two-run shot also scored Matthew Golda who walked one batter earlier, giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead.
Alabama then gained a 3-2 lead in the top of third by plating three runs on two hits, highlighted by a two run double by the nine hole hitter Bryce Eblin. Tommy Seidl then plated Eblin two batters later with a sacrifice fly.
UAB tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with three hits from Brandon Willoughby, Joseph Kiel and an RBI bunt single by Peyton Puckett.
A solo home run from Alabama's designated hitter Owen Diodati gave the Crimson Tide a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth, but the Blazers once again responded in the bottom of the seventh with RBI sac bunt from John Marc Mullins to tie the game at 4-4.
Sears led off the bottom of the eighth and missed his second home run of the game by inches, which resulted in a double. Hall was the following batter and his rope to left field scored pinch runner Gavin Lewis Jr. for the game-winning run.
UAB out-hit Alabama 9-8 in the contest.
Brady Greene (2-0) picked up the win for UAB and Collin Taylor tallied his third save of the season by pitching a scorless top half of the ninth.
UAB is back in action this weekend at Young Memorial Field as the Blazers host Middle Tennessee for a three-game Conference USA series.
